Freebies for Friday the 13th: Get Lucky with Deals from Krispy Kreme and Wendy’s
Friday the 13th is widely known as a day considered to bring bad luck.
In contrast, some companies aim to change that perception this year by providing enticing discounts and offers on this eerie day, which happens at least once each year.
Wendy’s and Krispy Kreme are rolling out special promotions to help lift the spirits of those who might feel anxious about this day.
Here’s what you need to know about these offers and how to take advantage of them.
Krispy Kreme Offer: 13 Cent Doughnuts
Krispy Kreme is treating customers to a dozen Original Glazed doughnuts for only 13 cents when they buy any full-priced dozen or a 16-count of Minis, as reported by YSL News.
This special deal is available on Friday at selected locations, with a limit of one dozen per customer for in-store purchases or when ordering online for pickup or delivery through the Krispy Kreme app and website using the promo code “13.”
Wendy’s: Free Fry Offer
Wendy’s is providing its Rewards members with a free order of hot and crispy fries of any size with each purchase when ordered through the app. Additionally, customers can grab a small Frosty for just $1 until the end of the month.
The Origins of Friday the 13th’s Unlucky Reputation
National Geographic Kids highlights that the exact explanation for why Friday the 13th is perceived as unlucky is unclear, but it likely stems from Christian beliefs.
For instance, according to the Bible, Judas, who betrayed Jesus, was the 13th person at the Last Supper. Additionally, various unfortunate events in the Bible are said to have occurred on Fridays, as noted by National Geographic Kids.
Dr. Phil Stevens, a retired anthropology professor from the University at Buffalo and author of “Rethinking the Anthropology of Magic and Witchcraft: Inherently Human,” discussed with YSL News last year the concept of this holiday, describing it as a form of “magical thinking.”
Stevens views the fear surrounding Friday the 13th as a representation of magical thinking, where individuals believe there is a connection between two otherwise unrelated concepts—specifically, Friday and the number 13 when they coincide.
He further considers it a taboo because the term superstition carries a negative implication, even when one speaks about their own beliefs.
