Unraveling the Mystery: HGTV’s Quest for America’s Most Terrifying Home

What is the ‘Scariest House in America’? HGTV sets out to discover

NORTH KINGSTOWN, R.I. – Deep in the woods lies a house that many consider frightening.

The haunting spirit of this house, which has a reputation for trapping people in the bathroom, could be enough to scare anyone away. But with dizzying three stories that feature balconies and walkways, along with numerous precarious spots that pose a risk of falls, many might say this home deserves some sort of recognition.

This eerie reputation is what prompted the owner to submit the house to HGTV’s “Scariest House in America.” Competing against eleven other houses nationwide for a $150,000 renovation, the show premieres Friday (9 EDT/PDT) as a spin-off of HGTV’s “Ugliest House in America.” In the spirit of Halloween, applicants will be judged based on factors such as their “scary appearance,” “poor functionality,” and “level of fear.”

While a real estate agent might describe the house as a 1,300-square-foot, three-bedroom, two-bathroom property with three stories and an elevator, the host of the “Scariest” series, actor and comedian Retta, simply describes it as a “terrifying renovation project.”

Notable features that earned the house a spot on HGTV’s ‘Scariest House in America’

  • The walls are irregularly aligned, leaning in or out at angles much greater than 90 degrees.
  • An “energy” – some would refer to it as a “ghost” – belonging to a past owner has been known to lock people in the bathroom.
  • The enormous front door, approximately two feet thick, swings open into a drop.
  • The elevator, although present, only operates between the second and third floors and can accommodate only one person at a time.

The house that ultimately takes the title will receive a surprise transformation courtesy of interior designer Alison Victoria, with the winner announced during the finale on October 25. Other intriguing contenders include:

  • A former jail that produces unexplained metallic clinks.
  • A house inhabited by bats that sometimes brush against people while they sleep.
  • An 18th-century farmhouse with a kitchen that contains a 35-foot open well whose depths remain unknown.
  • A property where a ghost physically bumps into individuals.
  • A home with doors that mysteriously lock, unlock, and move on their own.
  • A residence filled with eerie sounds such as screams, cries, and faint whispers.
  • The hideout of an ex-gangster, rumored to be haunted, scaring the current inhabitants away.
  • A house where a woman felt restrained by a ghost while changing bedsheets.
  • A building that boasts ceilings soaring as high as 20 feet on one of its floors.

Fortunately for the North Kingstown house, it will not be competing against The Conjuring House in Burrillville, R.I., which many label as the scariest house on the planet.
