‘Beetlejuice Beetlejuice’ Ending Explained: Surprising Twists and Cameos

Warning: Spoilers ahead! We’re breaking down key moments and the conclusion of “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” (now in theaters), so read on cautiously if you haven’t watched it yet.

You’re familiar with Baby Yoda. Now, say hello to Baby Beetlejuice.

A chaotic, baby version of Michael Keaton’s mischievous character returns in the new film “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice,” a revisitation of the darkly humorous world Tim Burton crafted back in 1988. The infamous Beetlejuice is back, alongside his tiny troublemaker, and also features the return of Lydia Deetz (portrayed by Winona Ryder), the goth teenager he once tormented.

Years later, Beetlejuice is still vying for Lydia’s hand in marriage, and she even considers tying the knot to get his help: Her daughter, Astrid (Jenna Ortega), has been taken to the Afterlife and tricked into forfeiting her soul to a ghostly child named Jeremy (Arthur Conti) who is up to no good. Their struggles intertwine with Beetlejuice’s, as he runs from his furious ex-wife Delores (Monica Bellucci) and the Afterlife’s tough cop, Wolf Jackson (Willem Dafoe).

Let’s explore the film’s crazy conclusion, the exciting cameos, and of course, Baby Beetlejuice.

What Happens in the Finale of ‘Beetlejuice Beetlejuice’?

Together with Beetlejuice, Lydia traverses the Afterlife to rescue her daughter, and Astrid is saved thanks to the haunting “ghost with the most” and her dearly departed father (Santiago Cabrera), whose spirit takes on a piranha-draped civil servant persona in the Afterlife. However, saving Astrid means that Lydia now must go through with marrying Beetlejuice in the living realm, leading her to a church where she’s initially set to wed her arrogant manager, Rory (Justin Theroux). Rory reveals himself to be a greedy jerk, and Delores crashes the scene, prompting an absurd dance party to the tune of “MacArthur Park.”

As the worlds of the living and the dead collide, a sandworm swoops in to rescue everyone by devouring Rory and Delores. Astrid exploits a legal loophole to invalidate her mother’s marriage contract with Beetlejuice, causing him to explode like a balloon and presumably return to the Afterlife.

Are There Any Exciting Cameos in the ‘Beetlejuice’ Sequel?

Danny DeVito, a consistent collaborator with Burton over the years, makes a brief appearance at the start of “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” as an undead janitor in the Afterlife who suffers a soul-sucking fate at the hands of Delores.

However, the most intriguing character return is that of Lydia’s headless father, Charles Deetz, originally played by Jeffrey Jones. In this sequel, Burton reimagines the character without showcasing the actor (who now has a criminal record). Charles meets his fate in a peculiar plane crash while being devoured by a shark, and his death plays a key role in reuniting Lydia, Astrid, and Lydia’s stepmother Delia (Catherine O’Hara) after some emotional estrangement.

While Delia copes with her loss in her quirky, artistic manner, Charles – now headless and sporting a voice reminiscent of Jones – makes his way to the Afterlife. They cross paths without recognizing each other after Delia suffers an accidental snake bite, but eventually, this odd pair finds happiness as they board a soul train to heaven together.

Is There a Post-Credits Scene in ‘Beetlejuice Beetlejuice’?

No, there isn’t a post-credits scene. However, the last moments hint at a potential third installment. After rescuing Astrid, a montage showcases her and Lydia on various adventures, with Astrid finding romance overseas and even getting married.

Inside a hospital, Astrid is in labor when suddenly Baby Beetlejuice appears, an animated little character previously showcased as one of Beetlejuice’s quirky antics while he pretends to be a therapist for Lydia and Rory.

Next, we see Lydia waking up in bed, seemingly trapped in a nightmare. Beetlejuice then pops up beside her and says, “I just had the weirdest dream.” Lydia, startled, quickly realizes she’s still caught in one of Beetlejuice’s mind games, suggesting that he might be planning to choose Astrid as his next unsuspecting bride.
