Anne Hathaway Hints at ‘The Princess Diaries 3’ Prequel: “Miracles Do Happen!”

Anne Hathaway announces ‘The Princess Diaries 3’ prequel: ‘Miracles do happen’

Anne Hathaway is ready to step back into her role as Princess Mia Thermopolis in the upcoming film “The Princess Diaries 3.”

The Oscar-winning star confirmed her return to this iconic character through an Instagram video posted on Friday, where she shared that the film is still being developed.

In the video, she remarked, “Miracles happen,” along with showcasing a news article hinting at the movie’s progress, initially reported by Variety. She included clips from the first “Princess Diaries” film and reiterated her famous line: “Shut up!”

According to Variety, the film has been under development since 2022, and Adele Lim, who previously worked on “Crazy Rich Asians,” will direct, with Hathaway returning as the star. This film marks the third entry in the cherished series, following “The Princess Diaries” from 2001 and its sequel “The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement” from 2004.

Adele Lim expressed her excitement in a statement to Variety, saying, “As a huge fan of the original ‘Princess Diaries,’ I’m thrilled to help bring this third chapter to life. We aim to uphold the film’s themes of female empowerment, joy, and mentorship for audiences around the globe.”

‘Princess Diaries’ was one of Hathaway’s early roles

Now 41, Hathaway was just 17 years old when she first took on the role of Princess Mia.

Back in April, she shared with V Magazine that the development of “Princess Diaries 3” was progressing well, but mentioned, “That’s all I can share for now. There’s nothing officially announced yet, but things are positive.”

Hathaway also noted that “The Princess Diaries” was her “first significant film role,” stating how grateful she felt to be included in the process by director Garry Marshall, who made her feel valued and respected on set.

There’s no confirmation yet on whether Julie Andrews will be back to reprise her role as Queen Clarisse Renaldi, Mia’s grandmother. In an interview in December 2022, she expressed doubts about the possibility of returning.

“I think the chances are slim,” she said. “It was discussed briefly after the second film, but now so many years have passed, and both Annie and I are significantly older. I’m not sure how it would work out,” Andrews added.

She concluded, “I would really doubt it at this point.”
