Attorney for Luigi Mangione reacts to new evidence regarding CEO shooting case: Updates
The individual accused of fatally shooting UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson remains in a Pennsylvania jail without bail, while New York police confirm substantial progress in their investigation into the shocking murder.
Luigi Mangione, 26, was linked to the crime scene through his fingerprints found on both a water bottle and a protein bar wrapper. Additionally, investigators matched the firearm discovered when arresting him in Pennsylvania to the shell casings found outside the Hilton hotel in Manhattan, where Thompson was shot on December 4, according to Jessica Tisch, the NYPD commissioner.
Mangione’s lawyer, Thomas Dickey, stated that his client plans to plead not guilty to all charges and intends to contest extradition to New York, where he faces a second-degree murder charge. In a CNN interview, Dickey expressed his desire to review the fingerprints and ballistics evidence.
“These two types of evidence are not without their controversies, particularly regarding their credibility and accuracy,” Dickey remarked. He mentioned plans for his team to engage experts to examine the evidence before questioning its validity and challenging its admissibility in court.
Investigators have also reported finding writings on Mangione that include “admissions concerning the crime” and sentiments of “hostility” towards corporate America. He was apprehended after a tip led authorities to him at a McDonald’s.
Did Luigi Mangione’s relatives know him? Police are assessing tips
It remains uncertain whether Mangione’s family recognized him from the surveillance footage released by the NYPD following the shooting and prior to his arrest in Pennsylvania.
NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny informed Fox News that none of the over 200 tips received by the NYPD identified Mangione.
On MSNBC, NYPD Chief of Patrol John Chell and Deputy Commissioner of Operations Kaz Daughtry were questioned regarding whether Mangione’s relatives or friends had informed law enforcement about him.
<p”After the arrest, these matters will be investigated, and answers will emerge in due course,” Chell stated.
Daughtry confirmed that the NYPD has received over 400 tips and is currently “still reviewing” all of them.
Supporters raised over $30K for Luigi Mangione’s legal expenses
Despite coming from a wealthy and established family, Luigi Mangione is receiving financial assistance from anonymous online contributors to support his legal defense.
A fundraiser on the Christian-oriented free speech platform GiveSendGo had amassed over $31,000 by Wednesday afternoon, aiming for a total of $200,000. The New Jersey-based campaign was initiated by a newly established “December 4th Legal Committee,” likely alluding to the date of the shooting.
Representatives from GiveSendGo indicated to YSL News that multiple campaigns for Mangione are underway, including a smaller fundraiser that was unpublished on Wednesday. Other social media connections have directed people to Mangione’s jail commissary account asking for donations for “snacks, sodas, an iPad, etc.”
Mangione’s lawyer did not reply to YSL News’s request for comments but mentioned to CNN on Tuesday that he “probably wouldn’t” accept public contributions for his client’s legal expenses.

Insurance companies increase safety measures following UnitedHealthcare CEO’s murder
In response to the recent deadly shooting of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, various companies are reevaluating their security protocols. Many organizations have removed the biographies and photos of top executives from their websites, while others are shutting down offices or canceling in-person events.
Matthew Peters, who serves as the vice president of protective services at Guidepost Solutions, a security firm, mentioned that the volume of phone inquiries has “at least quadrupled” following the murder of Thompson. Businesses across “every single sector” are reassessing their security arrangements, particularly for in-person gatherings such as investor meetings and holiday celebrations.
This additional security comes as law enforcement agencies nationwide remain vigilant for potential copycat incidents involving other executives. For instance, the Chicago police initiated a probe after someone vandalized several businesses with the message “Kill your CEO” over the weekend, as reported by local news outlets.
This week, a woman in Lakeland, Florida, was taken into custody for allegedly concluding a call with an insurance company by saying “delay, deny, depose,” phrases that were reportedly found on the shell casings at the site of last week’s shooting in Manhattan, according to WFLA. After claiming she was denied coverage, the woman was charged with making threats related to a mass shooting or terrorism, as noted by Polk County’s court records.

Lawyer Thomas Dickey comments on Luigi Mangione’s courtroom outburst: ‘He is frustrated’
As deputies brought Mangione to the Blair County Courthouse for an extradition hearing on Tuesday, footage captured him directing his frustration at reporters, shouting remarks like “Completely out of touch and an insult to the intelligence of the American people.” Other statements he made were difficult to understand.
In a conversation with CNN, Mangione’s attorney, Dickey, expressed that the outburst stemmed from the “frustration [of] being a young man incarcerated and facing very serious allegations.”
“He is upset about the outrage and what is happening to him, as well as the accusations being made against him,” Dickey stated, noting that he had not met Mangione prior to those comments being made outside the courthouse.
“Now he has someone to represent him and to advocate on his behalf,” he explained. “I believe you’ll notice a significant change in his behavior moving forward.”
Luigi Mangione shares health concerns on Reddit
Using the username “Mister_Cactus,” Mangione appears to have posted on Reddit discussing his health struggles and various symptoms that have affected him for over a decade.
He began experiencing pain in January 2022, revealing that by July 2023, his “back and hips locked up after the incident” and his entire lumbar and hip region had been misaligned since. He mentioned suffering from bladder and genital pain, back pain, and sciatica in a post. He also noted the onset of numbness in his groin, bladder, and below the right knee.
In response to another Reddit user who was seeking advice about surgery on the L5-S1 lumbosacral joint, a post linked to Mangione discussed his own surgery experience: “The surgery wasn’t as terrifying as I had built it up to be in my mind, and within a week, I knew I had made the right choice.”
In additional posts, “Mister_Cactus” detailed health issues related to Lyme disease that he contracted as a teenager, which led to “brain fog.” He missed out on soccer tryouts after contracting Lyme disease at age 13 and noticed “mild cognitive decline” by age 15. His symptoms reportedly worsened in 2017 while he was studying at the University of Pennsylvania, although further tests for Lyme disease returned negative results.
He also shared about struggles with sleep disturbances in July 2018 and discussed irritable bowel syndrome in a group in August of the same year, looking for dietary advice to alleviate his symptoms.
