Linda Lavin, Award-winning Actress and ‘Alice’ Star, Passes Away at 87

Her passing was sudden, and she is survived by “the love of her life,” according to her representative Michael Gagliardo.

Linda Lavin, the acclaimed actress and singer celebrated for her role in the TV show “Alice,” has died, confirmed her representative. She was 87 years old.

A star of the beloved sitcom “Alice,” which aired from 1976 to 1985, Lavin portrayed Alice Hyatt, a working mother and aspiring singer managing her career while raising her son in a diner setting.

Lavin started her performance career at age 5, as noted on IMDb. By the late 1960s, she had begun to seek acting opportunities in New Jersey and received a Tony nomination in 1969 following appearances in various musicals and shows.

After “Alice” concluded, Lavin returned to the theater and won a Tony Award in 1987 for her performance in “Broadway Bound.” She was nominated again in 1998 for “The Diary of Anne Frank,” a third nomination for “Tales of the Allergist Wife” in 2000, and another for her role in the 2010 revival of “Collected Stories,” eight years after her PBS performance in the same play.

Her extensive television career includes appearances in the 1970s-’80s ABC sitcom “Barney Miller,” the NBC sitcom “Conrad Bloom” in 1998, voice work in “Courage the Cowardly Dog,” and roles in “Sean Saves the World” and “9JKL.”

Lavin starred in “B Positive,” another CBS sitcom by “Conrad Bloom” creator Marco Pennette, for two seasons between 2020 and 2022.

In addition to acting, she directed ten episodes of “Alice” and served as executive producer for numerous TV movies and docuseries. One noteworthy project was the 1992 series “Room for Two,” where she starred as a TV producer and also took on the executive producer role.

Lavin was married to her third husband, Bakunas, since 2005. She was previously married to actor Kip Niven from 1982 to 1992 and to Ron Leibman from 1969 to 1981. Although she had no children of her own, she embraced the role of stepmother to her husbands’ children.
