Bill Hader Surprised as His Los Angeles Home Escapes Wildfire Damage: ‘It Feels Surreal’

Bill Hader’s residence made it through the wildfires in Los Angeles, but he still finds it hard to believe the extent of the destruction around him.

In a Tuesday interview with KTLA, a local news station, Hader shared his feelings about the devastation in his Pacific Palisades neighborhood, which was heavily impacted by the fires.

“People keep saying ‘unreal’… It really doesn’t feel real,” he expressed to KTLA. “I’m truly in shock. Everything is just gone. The Alphabet Streets, which I see as the heart of the Palisades, such a beautiful area, is completely wiped out. Everything’s just gone.”

He recounted an experience when he saw video footage of the flames and tried to rush back home, but was caught in gridlock traffic. He felt relieved that his family managed to evacuate safely. Hader has three daughters—Hannah, Harper, and Hayler Clementine—with his ex-wife Maggie Carey, and he is currently dating comedian Ali Wong.

Journalist Josh Haskell from ABC 7 shared on X that Hader took it upon himself to assist during the crisis. Haskell recounted an amusing encounter when a local resident approached the news van wanting to help, only to lower his mask and reveal himself as Bill Hader. “He couldn’t have been nicer!” Haskell remembered on X.

In the KTLA interview, Hader described how quickly and fiercely the wildfires escalated.

“It’s astonishing how rapidly it all unfolds,” he remarked about the devastation in their once-great community.

Numerous celebrities have been impacted by the wildfires in Los Angeles. Miles Teller is among those who have lost their homes, while Jamie Lee Curtis has pledged $1 million to support recovery efforts. Jennifer Garner is contributing through her longstanding work with Save The Children, and stars like Zachary Levi and Khloe Kardashian have criticized California politicians for their response to the disaster.

As of the most recent updates from Cal Fire on Wednesday, the two most damaging ongoing fires—the Palisades Fire, notably the most devastating in the city’s history, and the Eaton Fire—were 19% and 45% contained, respectively. The Hurst Fire near Sylmar, California, was reported to be 97% contained. Sadly, at least 24 lives have been lost due to the Palisades and Eaton fires.

Despite the chaos, the expected winds turned out to be less severe than anticipated on Tuesday, allowing firefighting teams to make headway in controlling the dangerous wildfires before stronger winds return. The National Weather Service issued a red flag warning for Los Angeles and Ventura counties, indicating a “particularly dangerous situation” that is expected to last through Wednesday afternoon.

“We’re still at risk. Please remain vigilant for fast-moving fires,” warned the Los Angeles office of the weather service.
