Charges Filed Against Mother and Boyfriend in Toddler’s Death
In Two Rivers, Wisconsin, law enforcement has charged a mother and her boyfriend in connection with the death of 3-year-old Elijah Vue. His remains were discovered months after he went missing, prompting a large-scale search.
Katrina Baur, the mother, faces charges including chronic neglect resulting in death, child neglect, and obstructing an officer. Her boyfriend, 39-year-old Jesse Vang, is charged with repeated acts of physical abuse of a child that led to death, hiding a corpse, and obstructing an officer.
Both Baur and Vang were initially arrested in February on various child neglect and obstruction charges shortly after Elijah was reported missing. The new allegations regarding the child’s death emerged following the discovery of his remains in September.
Manitowoc County District Attorney Jacalyn emphasized the gravity of the situation at a press conference, stating, “This is an incredibly tragic situation that has shaken our community. Our priority has always been to ensure a fair and just process, and today’s announcement reflects our dedication to upholding the law and seeking justice for Elijah.”
Authorities Conduct Extended Search for Missing Toddler
Elijah was reported missing by Vang on February 20, prompting an extensive search throughout Two Rivers. Authorities urged community members to provide any tips. Over the course of the investigation, several items of evidence were recovered, including a plaid blanket with Elijah’s DNA on it.
On September 7, search teams found Elijah’s remains in a wooded area on private land, located approximately three miles from where he was believed to be last seen at Vang’s home.
Both Baur and Vang are currently held at Manitowoc County Jail. They are scheduled to appear at a bail hearing for the new charges on Friday afternoon at the Manitowoc County Courthouse.
During the press briefing, Two Rivers Police Capt. Andrew Raatz expressed gratitude towards the agencies and volunteers who assisted in the search for Elijah following his disappearance and in the investigation of his death.
“Elijah has been our top priority since he was reported missing on February 20,” Raatz stated. “Following the discovery of his remains last month, law enforcement and the district attorney’s office have tirelessly worked to bring those responsible for his death to justice.”
