‘Bachelorette’ participant Devin Strader refutes abuse claims as new information arises
Recent court filings reveal Strader’s ex-girlfriend alleged he once said: ‘I almost killed you.’ Strader dismisses all violence accusations, asserting none have been substantiated.
Devin Strader, a former contestant on “The Bachelorette,” publicly rejected claims of abusive behavior following revelations from court documents obtained by YSL News. His ex-girlfriend reportedly told authorities that Strader had mentioned, “I almost killed you.”
In an Instagram post on Thursday, Strader expressed his desire to clarify what he called “numerous stories and misrepresentations circulating in the media” after his notable exit from the show this month.
“These allegations are entirely false as I have never harmed anyone or treated my ex-girlfriend in the ways I’ve been accused,” Strader claimed. “The restraining order was never approved and was ultimately dismissed.”
According to findings from YSL News, a temporary restraining order was issued against Strader in March 2017 after he allegedly burglarized his ex-girlfriend’s home in Baton Rouge following their breakup. In the order, she accused Strader of slapping, choking, pushing, stalking, and spitting on her, as well as damaging her phone and a wall.
The restraining order was extended a month later before being dismissed after the ex-girlfriend violated its terms by reaching out to Strader, as indicated in court records reviewed by YSL News on Thursday.
YSL News has sought comments from Devin Strader’s attorney.
Ex-girlfriend: ‘He has belittled me and taken everything from me’
Strader’s ex-girlfriend applied for the restraining order after returning home post-breakup and discovering her residence had been “ransacked.” Many of her belongings, including perfume and jewelry, had been either destroyed or removed.
“I am now afraid to sleep in my own room, knowing he is disturbed enough to break in and ruin my things,” she wrote.
In her request for the restraining order, she detailed other incidents, claiming Strader hurled her cell phone with such force it punctured a wall, smashed a lamp against a door, placed her in a chokehold, covered her mouth, spat on her, and threw his drink during a game at the Pelicans’ match, according to documents.
“One morning, I woke up in pain, covered in bruises, and with a pounding headache,” she recalled. “When I asked him what happened, he replied, ‘I almost killed you; I don’t want to talk about it.’
She further described Strader’s behavior as verbally and mentally abusive, which contributed to her extended stay in the relationship despite the horrific experiences.
“He has belittled me and taken everything from me,” she expressed. “I wish no other woman has to endure what I went through.”
She insisted that Strader needs “serious mental help or he will injure me or the next person that crosses his path.”
Strader was convicted for burglarizing his ex-girlfriend’s residence and for trespassing. However, YSL News could not locate any evidence suggesting charges of violence or abuse against him.
Dismissal of the temporary restraining order was due to ‘unverified, written claims’
Despite the temporary restraining order, Strader allegedly continued to reach out to his ex-girlfriend by liking her social media photos and making repeated phone calls, as per court records. The ex-girlfriend later acknowledged a “slip-up,” mentioning she contacted Strader, which contributed to the order’s dismissal.
“Because of my error, the lawyer will no longer represent me, and I cannot afford to hire a private attorney, which is why I have no choice but to dismiss the case,” she explained.
The temporary restraining order was officially dismissed in May 2017, with both parties agreeing to share court expenses, keep their distance from each other, and make a definitive court appearance to resolve the details.
Reflecting on their relationship, Strader commented that it was “the first time I ever fell in love and I learned so much from our time together. It was a growing phase for both of us.”
According to a statement received by EW, Strader’s attorney, Rhett Spano, indicated that the ex-girlfriend sought the protection order “based solely on unverified, written claims in the affidavit and nothing beyond that.”
“The Judge granted a temporary restraining order as a precaution until Devin had the chance to be presented with the allegations during a court hearing,” Spano informed EW. “At the hearing, the petitioner could have pursued a full hearing before the Judge, but instead It was decided that a full restraining order would not be sought. Instead, both individuals reached an agreement for a mutual stay-away order, stipulating that they would refrain from contacting each other for a designated time frame, which lasted for six months and has now expired.
