Egg Prices Climb Again: A Dozen Eggs Exceeds $3 in August. Is Bird Flu Responsible?
In August, the cost of a dozen eggs reached $3.20, compared to $2 last year. However, this is still lower than the peak price of $4.82 in January 2023.
The price of eggs has risen yet again, surging over 28% in August from the same month a year prior.
This past August, the price for a dozen eggs was $3.20, up from $2.00 in August 2023. Prices also increased from July, when a dozen eggs cost $3.08, as reported by the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
While inflation is often cited as a reason for rising prices on common household items, the main driver behind the increase in egg prices is the avian flu.
Millions of birds are falling ill across the United States, resulting in a decline in egg production, which in turn leads to higher prices at grocery stores. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, over 100 million birds have been impacted by bird flu since January 2022.
The outbreaks have spread across 48 states nationwide.
Egg Prices Have Fluctuated Before
Nevertheless, the current egg prices in August are significantly lower compared to those toward the end of 2022 and the beginning of 2023. In December 2022, a dozen eggs sold for $4.25, and they hit a high of $4.82 in January 2023.
