Jim Harbaugh Discloses Heart Condition That Led to His Sudden Departure During Broncos Showdown

Chargers coach Jim Harbaugh discloses that a heart issue led to a brief absence during the game against the Broncos

Jim Harbaugh, the head coach of the Los Angeles Chargers, shared that he experienced a heart condition that made him leave the field for a short period during the team’s 23-16 victory over the Denver Broncos in Week 6.

“I had an episode of something called atrial flutter,” Harbaugh explained after the game. “It happened on Sunday.”

During the team’s first offensive series, Harbaugh was accompanied to the locker room by medical staff in the early minutes of the first quarter.

The 60-year-old coach received treatment from doctors in the locker room, where his heart was restored to a normal rhythm. He returned to the game with just over seven minutes left in the first quarter.

“They checked my heart with an (electrocardiogram) and confirmed it was back to sinus rhythm,” Harbaugh said after the game. “I felt fine, so I went back out on the field.”

Harbaugh mentioned that he has dealt with episodes of atrial flutter in the past, including once while coaching the San Francisco 49ers in 2012.

While Harbaugh was in the locker room, Jesse Minter, the defensive coordinator, took over as the interim head coach.

After the game, Harbaugh reassured everyone that he was feeling well but mentioned he would see a cardiologist for a follow-up on Monday.

“I trust the doctors,” Harbaugh stated. “It’s about the heart, and you have to take it seriously. So, I trust them.”
