Mandy Moore responds to criticism after promoting in-laws’ GoFundMe during LA fires

Mandy Moore is responding to backlash regarding her actions amid the California wildfires.

The actress, known for her role in “This Is Us,” recently shared a link to a fundraising campaign for her in-laws, Griff and Kit Goldsmith, whose home was destroyed in the recent fires affecting Los Angeles.

In an Instagram update on Thursday, Moore informed her followers that her brother-in-law and sister-in-law “lost their home and everything they own” due to the Eaton fire. She urged fans to “please consider donating and sharing to help them rebuild,” directing them to the GoFundMe page.

“With their first baby on the way in just a few weeks, they need our support more than ever,” Moore wrote.

“Griff is a touring musician and he also lost his entire collection of drums and percussion instruments that he relies on to make a living. It’s a lot to handle.”

However, some followers expressed discontent, questioning why Moore didn’t simply cover the entire $60,000 goal herself.

“It’s surprising that a multimillionaire like you is asking ordinary people who live paycheck to paycheck to donate money for your family member when you could easily cover the entire amount without it affecting your finances,” one comment stated.

In response, Moore said on Instagram, “People doubting whether we’re helping our family or judging how much money someone thinks we have isn’t constructive or compassionate. Of course, we are helping them.”

She further expressed, “Our friend Matt set up this GoFundMe, and I’m sharing because many have asked how to assist. We just lost much of our lives in a fire as well. Please, enough with the negativity. No one is forcing anyone to contribute.”

The GoFundMe campaign has surpassed $200,000 before closing to further donations.

The “Candy” singer previously mentioned that she had to evacuate her home in California and feared for its safety.

On Wednesday, she expressed gratitude that her family and pets made it out safely before it was too late and described feeling numb from the devastation so many, including her family, have faced. She noted that her children’s school in Altadena was “gone,” her favorite eateries had been “destroyed,” and many friends and loved ones have lost everything as well.

By Thursday, Moore shared that after returning to her neighborhood, she found that “miraculously, the main part of our house is still standing.” However, she reported losing their garage and back house, along with a studio belonging to her musician husband, Taylor Goldsmith.

“Everyone we know has lost everything,” Moore lamented. “Every home on our street is gone. My in-laws, my brother and sister-in-law, just weeks away from welcoming their first baby. Our best friends. I feel this strange survivor’s guilt. We love this community and will do everything we can to help rebuild and support it.”

Many celebrities have likewise lost their homes in the fires around Los Angeles, including Mandy Moore’s “This Is Us” co-star Milo Ventimiglia. In an emotional CBS News interview, he shared how difficult it was to return to his destroyed home.

“You start reflecting on all the memories tied to different areas of the house,” he explained. “And then you look at your neighbors’ houses and everything around, and your heart just shatters.”
