Bill Belichick, North Carolina explore coaching vacancy, reports indicate

Bill Belichick has never officially coached at the college level.

However, reports suggest the ex-New England Patriots head coach is in discussions about making a return to coaching in college football next season.

As reported by The Athletic and the NFL Network, Belichick has held talks with officials from the University of North Carolina regarding the school’s head-coaching position. The news about Belichick’s interest in UNC was initially reported by 247 Sports.

The specifics of these discussions, including whether Belichick is genuinely considering a coaching role in today’s NCAA environment, remain unclear. This follows the firing of former North Carolina coach Mack Brown on November 26.

Belichick’s connection to coaching is notable; his father, Steve, was a long-time assistant at the United States Naval Academy, and his son, Steve, served as the defensive coordinator at the University of Washington this past season. Despite this, Bill Belichick has not stepped onto a college field as a coach.

Belichick parted ways with the Patriots in January after an impressive 24-year tenure with the team. He had an interview for the head coaching position with the Atlanta Falcons, which ultimately went to Raheem Morris.
