Passenger Hurt on Royal Caribbean Cruise After Ship’s Quick Movement Due to Winds
A traveler on a Royal Caribbean International cruise suffered an injury following strong winds affecting the ship.
The Explorer of the Seas encountered sudden movements due to an unexpected gust of wind while near Tenerife in Spain’s Canary Islands, according to a spokesperson for the company speaking with YSL News. The ship is currently on a nearly two-week journey from Barcelona to Miami, Florida, as reported by CruiseMapper.
“A guest has been injured and needs further medical attention, so the ship will stop in Las Palmas, Spain to facilitate a medical disembarkation,” the Royal Caribbean representative said in an email. “We are keeping our guests informed about the changes.”
Another passenger, Jo Belle Gunthorpes from New York, felt the ship lean around 7:15 p.m. on Thursday while she was in her suite with family. “Everything on the table slid off and broke,” she recounted to YSL News.
Gunthorpes’ 6-year-old daughter became upset as they held onto a railing for balance. Despite taking multiple cruises each year, Gunthorpes stated they had never faced such an experience before. “We were definitely scared,” she remarked.
Gunthorpes noted that the most turbulent period lasted approximately six minutes, and the captain informed passengers they were caught in a wind squall with speeds reaching 73 knots. The Royal Caribbean spokesperson did not provide details on the wind speed or specifics regarding her account.
Gunthorpes mentioned that the crew kept passengers informed after the incident and provided several hours of complimentary Wi-Fi so they could reach out to loved ones.
Cruise lines strive to avoid bad weather, but this isn’t the only recent incident of its kind. Earlier this year, areas of Royal Caribbean’s Serenade of the Seas were inundated near the South American coast due to heavy rain and winds. Additionally, a Carnival Cruise Line vessel experienced rough seas while returning from a cruise to the Bahamas last year.
