Mike Lynch located: Tech mogul’s body retrieved from submerged superyacht, sources report

Authorities have confirmed that the body of British technology entrepreneur Mike Lynch was found on Thursday on his family’s superyacht, which sank near the coast of Italy after being caught in a sudden and severe storm, according to various news reports.

On Wednesday, four bodies were retrieved from the wreck, with Lynch’s 18-year-old daughter, Hannah, still missing, as reported by Reuters. CNBC and The Washington Post also covered the story.

Mike Lynch, 59, was widely recognized as the co-founder of Autonomy, the largest enterprise software company in Britain, which was sold to Hewlett-Packard in 2011. He had hosted friends on the yacht to celebrate his acquittal from fraud charges linked to the sale of Autonomy that occurred in June.

The yacht, named Bayesian, is a British-registered sailing vessel measuring 184 feet. It sank just before dawn on Monday while anchored near Porticello, close to Palermo, because of a powerful storm that struck the area. Of the 22 individuals aboard, 15 were rescued from the sea on Monday, including Lynch’s wife, Angela Bacares. Sadly, the ship’s cook, Ricardo Thomas, was found dead on the same day.

A thorough search operation was launched to find the six individuals still unaccounted for, which included Lynch and his daughter, as well as Judy and Jonathan Bloomer, who served as a non-executive chair of Morgan Stanley International, and Clifford Chance attorney Chris Morvillo with his wife, Neda Morvillo.

Jonathan Bloomer provided character testimony on Lynch’s behalf during his recent fraud trial, while Chris Morvillo, a U.S. citizen, was part of Lynch’s legal representation. Reports indicate that the bodies of both couples were recovered from the wreckage on Wednesday.

Hannah, Lynch’s younger daughter, remains the only person yet to be found. She was set to study English literature at Oxford University, as reported by the Sunday Times.

Local authorities have initiated an investigation to determine the cause of this tragic incident.

The yacht, which was registered in the U.K. and owned by Lynch’s wife, was built in 2008 by the Italian shipbuilder Perini and complied with international maritime regulations, as confirmed by Matthew Schanck, the chairman of the Maritime Search and Rescue Council.

Experts have suggested that a water spout—essentially a tornado occurring over water, capable of winds up to 120 mph—combined with the significant weight of the ship’s mast, one of the largest globally, might have contributed to the vessel’s sinking.
