Donald Trump promises to dismiss federal workers who don’t return to the office
WASHINGTON – President-elect Donald Trump announced on Monday his intention to terminate any federal employees who refuse to return to their offices once his administration takes charge. He also indicated plans to legally contest a Biden-era agreement facilitating remote work.
“If individuals do not come back to work, they will be let go,” Trump stated during a news conference at Mar-a-Lago, his private club and residence.
“A member of the Biden team granted a five-year exemption, meaning people could avoid returning to the office for that time,” he continued. “That’s absurd. It seems like a favor to a union, and we are definitely going to challenge this in court.”
The Social Security Administration, along with over 40,000 employees under the American Federation of Government Employees union, recently reached a consensus allowing most of their workers to continue remote work for two to five days a week.
Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy’s initiative aimed at reducing government expenses, known as the Department of Government Efficiency, is likely to advocate for the termination of remote work across federal agencies. Musk has frequently voiced his disapproval of working from home, referring to it as “morally wrong.”
According to the Office of Management and Budget, about half of the 2.3 million federal employees work entirely on-site, while the other half have the option to work remotely, with roughly 10% working exclusively from home.
