Waffle House CEO Walt Ehmer dies at 58 after a lengthy illness
Walt Ehmer started with Waffle House in 1992 and became president in 2002. Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens stated, “He leaves behind an impressive legacy.”
Waffle House CEO Walt Ehmer, who dedicated over 30 years to the Georgia-based restaurant chain, has passed away, as confirmed by the company on Sunday. He was 58 years old.
Ehmer died on Saturday following a prolonged illness, according to a statement released by the Waffle House board of directors to its employees, as reported by YSL News.
“Walt will be sincerely missed by his entire Waffle House family,” the company leaders stated. “We extend our deepest sympathies to Walt’s family. Please keep them in your thoughts and prayers during this challenging time.”
Joining Waffle House in 1992, Ehmer quickly ascended to senior leadership and was named president in 2002. He graduated from Georgia Tech in 1989. He eventually became the CEO and chairman of the popular breakfast chain known for its waffles.
The company is located in Norcross, which is roughly 20 miles northeast of downtown Atlanta in Gwinnett County.
‘A committed leader and safety advocate’
The Atlanta Police Foundation, where Ehmer served as a board trustee, described him as “a committed leader, a devoted advocate for public safety, and an unwavering supporter” of the organization’s mission to “create a safer and stronger Atlanta.”
“His deep commitment to community service and steadfast determination to enhance the lives of others will leave a lasting impression on everyone who had the privilege of knowing him,” the foundation wrote in an online statement. “Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends, and colleagues during this difficult period. He will be greatly missed.”
‘A lasting legacy’
Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens expressed his condolences to Ehmer’s loved ones and colleagues.
“His leadership, commitment, and kindness touched many lives, both within the Waffle House family and beyond. He leaves a significant legacy,” Dickens stated in a news release. “May his family find solace in his lasting influence and the impact he had on so many.”
