Celtics’ Jaylen Brown Labels Bucks’ Giannis Antetokounmpo as a ‘Child’ After Fake Handshake Incident
It’s quite rare to witness a “too slow” fake handshake, and even less common for an NBA player to fall for it.
On Sunday night, Boston Celtics star Jaylen Brown found himself on the other end of such a handshake from Milwaukee Bucks star Giannis Antetokounmpo, leading Brown to express his displeasure regarding the incident following Boston’s 113-107 win over Milwaukee.
“Giannis is like a child,” Brown remarked to reporters after the match. “I’m really focused on supporting my team to victory, which we accomplished tonight.”
The game was intense, particularly the matchup between Antetokounmpo and Brown, who frequently guarded each other. The fake handshake took place in the second half, just moments after Antetokounmpo was called for an offensive foul for swinging his elbow near Brown’s head.
As they walked away, it seemed some words were exchanged. Antetokounmpo then extended his hand in a seemingly friendly gesture but quickly pulled it back with a smile.
“Oh, that’s what he said? Wow,” Antetokounmpo responded during a news conference when he was informed of Brown’s remarks. “He called me a child? I thought I was complimenting him, but it seems it didn’t go over well. Still, that’s just who I am. I enjoy playing the game with passion and joy.”
Brown later acknowledged Antetokounmpo’s strong performance, where he scored 43 points and grabbed 14 rebounds.
“I’ll keep doing my thing,” Antetokounmpo added. “If that means being called a child, then so be it! I have three kids of my own and six nieces. I look after many kids around here, so when you’re with them, you sometimes act childishly.”
Later in the fourth quarter, Brown received a flagrant foul call while Antetokounmpo was driving through the lane. Brown made contact with him, resulting in Antetokounmpo falling to the floor.
Brown insisted that his foul was purely instinctual and not influenced by the earlier fake handshake, stating it was “just part of playing basketball.”
The flagrant foul came in a tied game, and Antetokounmpo’s successful free throws gave Milwaukee a slight edge. However, Boston managed to regroup and eventually secured the win.
Brown finished the game with 14 points, five rebounds, and four assists. With this victory, the Celtics improved to a record of 9-2, while Milwaukee fell to 2-8, placing them near the bottom of the Eastern Conference.
“I just enjoy playing and having fun, but I recognize Brown is a great player and a tough competitor,” Antetokounmpo concluded. “If given another chance, I would do it all over again.”
