Madison Keys defeats Iga Swiatek in three sets to reach Australian Open final
American player Madison Keys aims for her first Grand Slam title after an impressive victory over No. 2 seed Iga Swiatek, winning 5-7, 6-1, 7-6 (8) in the semifinals of the Australian Open.
Keys, seeded No. 19, came back strong after facing a match point against Swiatek, a five-time Grand Slam winner, in a match that lasted two hours and 38 minutes.
Now 29 years old, Keys has made it to her second Grand Slam final, having previously lost the 2017 U.S. Open final to Sloane Stephens.
“Yeah, I’m in the finals,” Keys stated after her victory. “That match was incredibly intense, and she played superbly. I felt like I was just trying to stay in it. I really took control in the second set, and the third set became a real struggle. It’s amazing to be here and I’m thrilled to play in the final on Saturday.”
Swiatek was serving at 6-5 and had a 40-30 lead but made an unforced error by hitting a shot into the net, resulting in her serve being broken after a double-fault, which led to a tiebreaker.
She also had a chance to win during the tiebreaker, where she was ahead 8-7, but Keys managed to win three consecutive points to secure her spot in the final.
Keys set to compete against Aryna Sabalenka
In the final, Keys will go up against Aryna Sabalenka, currently ranked as the world’s No. 1 player. Sabalenka, who is the two-time defending champion, defeated Paula Badosa 6-4, 6-2 in her semifinal match, marking her 20th consecutive win at the Australian Open. Regardless of the outcome in her match with Keys, she will retain her No. 1 ranking for the 15th week in a row.
“I have goosebumps. I’m really proud of myself. I’m grateful to my team for helping us reach this point,” Sabalenka expressed. “If I can make history (by winning), it would mean everything to me.”
She is aiming to be the first woman to achieve three consecutive championships at the Australian Open since Martina Hingis accomplished the feat in 1999.
